انكي؟

<aside> 💡

First, you need to understand that Anki is the program, and there are many decks on it like AnKing, Janki, etc.

So the main question is, which deck is the best?

The idea depends on how much time you have left until your exam and when you plan to take it. If you’re planning to take it in six or eight months, then Anki might be a waste of time. But if you really want to use Anki, avoid AnKing because it’s too big, and if your time is limited, it won’t be worth it. Generally, its cards are very basic and rely on rote memorization rather than connecting information.

What’s the goal of Anki anyway? It’s to review content. That’s why I recommend focusing more on solving questions and reading Amboss content because it’s well-summarized and well-structured.

Anki is great for purely memorization-heavy subjects (Micro, Pharma, and maybe Bio). For the other subjects, you need to understand them more, know how to solve problems, and apply concepts. For example, in Patho, it’s better to understand the Pathophysiology of the disease rather than memorizing random facts. Why? Because exam questions often play with the language, using synonyms or describing a concept instead of naming it directly.

So, once again, if you’re short on time, like planning to take the exam in six months or so, stay away from the large decks like AnKing because they will waste your time for nothing.

Okay, so how should you use Anki? Is Anki completely useless? No, of course not! It’s very useful for two things:

  1. Mehlman cards for Pharma, Bio, and Micro. These cards strike a balance between having a small number of cards, being well-written, and asking questions in a way that makes you connect information better. For example, Pharma has about 1000 cards, and all the essential concepts are included. It’s like having the "essence" of the subject.
  2. The second use is for NBME mistakes. You can turn your mistakes into Anki cards so you remember them.

Here’s my quick review of some popular decks:

Summary: Be aware that having a "big picture" understanding is more important than just memorizing random factoids. You should be able to explain something from A to Z. This is the main flaw of large decks like AnKing, where you’re fed fragmented information, giving you a false sense of confidence. But when it comes time to apply it, you might struggle.

From personal experience, if you have a lot of time, you can experiment with all these decks.

I encourage everyone to form their own opinion if they have time, of course, and to experiment. No matter how much advice you hear, some lessons have to be learned the hard way — through mistakes.

side rant: if u look at most xps for people passing u will find them saying anki is cool but i didnot use it or couldnot keep up with it so what should we learn from reading this? that it is non essential and doing questions is far more important
